As others have mentioned, this bar is not 16" on center. I mounted the brackets on the wall first (can be done with a short 2x4 or 1x4 running vertically instead of horizontally), so I did not have a large 2x8 or 2x10 spanning the wall. Then I drilled 2 new holes in the connecting bar and positioned it above the wall mounted brackets. It is solid, but the design could be better. For instance, there could be a couple of extra holed drilled in the connecting (pull up) bar to accomodate different widths. The brackets could be designed to give more holes in a straight line vertically instead of 4 holes that could not connect to the wall stud. Bottom line, it was cheaper than most options.
